The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association (SDCA) will host the Spearfish Region Roundup on September 14 at Killian's Food & Drink in Spearfish, South Dakota. Region Roundup events are open to both the public and SDCA members. The Spearfish Region Roundup event will begin with a social starting at 5:30 PM, followed by updates by the South Dakota Brand Board and a presentation by SDSU Extension on weaning management decisions that impact calf success at the feedlot.
Early Management Matters: An overview of weaning management decisions that impact calf success
How a feedlot animal will perform in the feedlot and on the rail when harvested is long determined before the calf reaches the feedlot. The ability for heifers to be receptive at breeding time can also be determined months before the breeding season. This timeframe can coincide with weaning. Therefore, as we approach the weaning event, it is important to revisit health, cattle handling, and nutritional management strategies that can have long-term impacts on how cattle perform later in life. Dr. Erin DeHaan, SDSU Extension Beef Specialist, will review some of these concepts and discuss current findings of related research being conducted at SDSU.
