Clark-Hamlin Cattlemen's Association Hosts Annual Meeting

The Clark Hamlin Cattlemen’s Association met on with several cattlemen and women on February 17th in Bryant, SD, for their annual meeting. The meeting started with the announcement of last year’s scholarship winners, Tyler Opdahl and Alicia Vig, learning about their schooling, and plans after school. Secretary Ryan Schmidt, Treasurer John Roe, and President Chance Popham all provided an update from last year’s annual meeting and a year in review. Clark Hamlin had a big year from selling Beef Bucks at local basketball games, volunteering at the South Dakota State Fair Beef Booth, and their annual scholarship. President Popham was re-elected, and Justin Lamount was nominated and elected to serve on the board.

SDCA President Warren Symens and Northeast Region Director, Drew Edleman, informed the group on topics in Pierre, summer Region Roundup meetings and Cattle Con in Orlando. To wrap up the night, Kelsey Ramerth from the Hamlin County Natural Resources Conservation Services, discussed cost share opportunities for farmers and ranchers.

Market Update

February 16, 2024

Moderate fed cattle cash trade in the North at $179 to $180 live and $287 dressed which is $1 to $2 softer live and $2 lower dressed compared to last week. Active trade in the South at $180 live which is $2 lower than last week.

In the boxed beef markets, the cutout moved higher with the Choice cutout increasing $0.29/cwt and the Select cutout adding $3.87/cwt. Reduced production and supplies are expected to lead to stronger demand later in the month followed by seasonal improvements in spring.

Feeder cattle traded mainly $2 lower to $5 higher, calves traded predominantly steady to $6 firmer, and market cows were mostly $2 lower to $3 higher.

Corn finished down 12 cents on the active March contract.
